This picture shows how the silt fence plough point cuts the trench and fabric is installed directly behind, creating an erosion proof seal.
The material comes in large rolls and is installed very tight and straight. This eliminates the flopping and swaying in the wind which leads to tearing fabric and breaking posts. The fence in this photo is still up 5 years later.
A tightly installed fence needs to be spliced as shown in this picture. With this method of installation, there are very few splices as the fabric comes in large 3,000 foot rolls rather than 100 foot rolls.
This picture shows a properly installed silt fence, which has been ploughed in sealing off all erosion. Note that very little water has gotten past the first fence.
Erosion control berms and water retention ponds stop erosion by holding back the surface water which allows the sediment (topsoil) to settle out. This drains the clean water off of the field and keeps the topsoil in the field and out of ditches and streams.
This shows an erosion control Hickenbottom used to build a water retention pond.
